The same account is in 2 Samuel 10 and 1 Chronicles 19:
4 So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved them and cut off their garments in the middle as far as their hips, and sent them away. 5 Then certain persons went and told David about the men. And he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. And the king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards grow, and then return.”
Notice that David did not tell his men to “suck it up and get back to battle”? As a leader, David understood that these men needed time to heal.
But Daughter of Encouragement, these men were not wounded! Why did they need time to heal?
“The men were greatly humiliated.”
Sometimes, the greatest wound is the wound you can’t see. Emotional pain is a wound too and people need time to heal from it so that they can fully invest in the next part of their lives.Too often, we tell people to get over their hurts far before they are ready to do so. Would you tell a man with two broken legs that he needs to stop being a baby, get up and walk already? So why do we do that to so many people struggling with pain, loss or grief? Just like our physical body, our emotions need to come to peace.
Funny, isn’t it, that David understood the need for these men to take time and heal and his son is famous for penning it?
1 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—
2 A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.
3 A time to kill and a time to heal;
A time to tear down and a time to build up.
4 A time to weep and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn and a time to dance.
5 A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.
6 A time to search and a time to give up as lost;
A time to keep and a time to throw away.
7 A time to tear apart and a time to sew together;
A time to be silent and a time to speak.
8 A time to love and a time to hate;
A time for war and a time for peace.
Thank you lord, for allocating time for everything. Thank you, for understanding that we need time, even though you exist outside of it. Please, give us wisdom to know what time we are in and give us the grace to walk with others who are in a different season.
